This Week in Digital Marketing 30 May – 3 June: Social Search Going Global, Essential Facebook Stats and L’Oreal’s New Digital Campaign
June 2, 2011 by Joanne North
This week Twitter rolled out a number of changes including new email notifications that alert you when one of your tweets has been retweeted or added as a favourite tweet. Hubspot compiled a list of social media stats that are useful for answering questions such as ‘am I big enough to get into social media?’ Google has started rolling out its social search results globally, and plans to go live with its +1 button as soon as possible. And we look at both L’Oréal’s new digital campaign and a Twitter issue that relates to the upcoming NZ election.
New Email Notifications for Twitter
Twitter has new email notification options. Now, in addition to getting email notifications for direct messages, you also have the option of getting an email when someone you follow retweets or favourites one of your tweets. This makes it a whole lot easier to keep tabs on important Twitter activity. You can opt into these email notifications by going to the settings tab of your Twitter account.
12 Essential Facebook Stats
Facebook has both a wide and highly engaged audience, but small businesses and B2B companies still question the value of that audience to them. To help small businesses and B2B companies make an informed decision about their Facebook strategy, Hubspot has compiled a list of 12 essential Facebook statistics that cover issues around: ‘Should my B2B company have a Facebook page?’ ‘Should I be on Facebook if my customers aren’t?’ And, ‘our Facebook page only has a few hundred fans, so why bother?’
Google Social Search Goes Global
Google has started rolling out Social Search in 19 different languages (with more languages on the way). After testing out the social search features on the Google.com domain since 2009, it seems that Google’s finally ready to make social results available to searches outside of the U.S. You can read up on the details and watch a video demonstration of the new(ish) feature direct from Google. But, that’s not the only Google news. Google is also gearing up to introduce the +1 feature as soon as possible, and to show that they mean business, they’ve created a ‘how-to’ guide on adding the +1 button to your web site.
L’Oréal’s New Digital Strategy
L’Oréal is launching its new digital strategy through Demand Media, the creator of such sites as ‘TypeF.com’ and ‘eHow’. We’re not sure of who spoke to whom, but the gist of things is that Demand Media will set up content around the most popular hair and beauty search queries. L’Oréal will then have the exclusive right to advertise on these pages, which will thematically link the content on the page with the ad. The content will be mostly focused around ‘how to’ and ‘advice’ style queries. According to Fashionably Marketing: “This is all a huge step forward for L’Oréal because in years past, their goal was to use magazines, newspapers, and commercials as their only advertisement mediums”.
Social Media for Customer Service
Social media is great for customer service as it gives customers a direct line into a business (without them even having to pick up the phone). Even if customer service isn’t a part of your social media strategy, there are still times when those managing social media accounts need to field customer service related issue. The implication is that social media account managers need to be prepared to handle customer service issues in an efficient and effective manner. If this sounds like it’s up your alley, then check out 26 tips for integrating your customer service into your social media.
The NZ Elections and Social Media
Social media is going to play a big part in the election campaign this year, with the Electoral Commission confessing that it plans to make use of social media to promote the election. However, MPs and their supporters (and critics) must be warned not to send messages using Twitter on election day. According to Stuff, ‘Electioneering on election day is an offence under the Electoral Act, with fines of up to $20,000′ and tweeting with a view to influencing on the day of the election could be considered a breach of the Act.
On A Lighter Note
We thought that you might be like this video of David Jones, global CEO of Havas and Euro RSCG, talking about the five key shifts in the world of marketing because of social and digital revolution (at Mashable Connect 2011). David raises some interesting points, including the increasing importance of reality over image and giving up control.
