This Week in Digital Marketing 26-30 July: What to use when you go fishing, Mobile numbers, B2B Case Studys and more!

July 30, 2010 by

This week we recorded the first podcast edition of “This Week in Digital Marketing” we’re going to do this once a month as a wrap up of our faviourite stories. This will be released next week on this blog.  This week though, from Linkbait to mobile marketing to a piece of software that helps you annotate websites, enjoy and read on for more.

Linkbait, it’s like fishing but online instead of water

Our favourite ‘other’ blog HubSpot put together this post on LinkBait techniques, the original source is here: 15 linkbait techniques for seo and social media.  It covers quite a few ideas0, as a baseline, be generous, provide something work talking about and people will (and in turn will link).  However read the post for the more hands on ideas from creating infographics, lists, build tools (and diagnostics) and lots more.

Mobile Marketing Numbers

Did you know that half the connections to the internet are by mobiles? And that iPhone Users downloaded on average 4.8 apps last December? One of which was a paid app! Or that within 5 years there will be more mobile internet users than desktop users? Make the jump to read all these mind blowing mobile marketing inforgraphics.

(this is a nice link bait example too)

Manual PPC Management is Dead!

Or so says James from Semvironment (ie SEMvironment) who was posed with the challenge to spend $7,000 in a day on Google Adwords for a client.  Read the full post for all the details, in short though he strikes a point, companies can keep tweaking their bid scores up/down to hit the sweet spots OR they can focus on stronger creative which attracts more click throughs and lower costs… (note: Facebook Advertisers are probably more aware of this).  Anyway well worth a read.

A B2B Content Case Study

We’re often inundated with requests for B2B case studies, Chris Gayner shares one he worked on, formulating a content strategy for an event.  He takes you through all the steps (all sounds logical to me) but should be helpful to those in the b2b space.  I love that his first point is “review and align to your business objectives” – good indication of a project that’s going to be successful.  The end result was record revenue overall and largest growth year on year for the event.  Read the full story here: developing your content strategy.

Bounce! A handy tool for screenshots & annotating websites

We found Bounce via SitePoint, a handy little tool for taking screenshots and annotating them, it does it by loading the webpage, you make your changes then share the url.  Very handy for sharing with colleagues.  Alternatively FireShot for FireFox is quite good if you’re using Windows and was my personal favourite before I made the switch!

On a lighter note

Flipboard a social magazine for the iPad launched late last week, so we thought it’d be worth linking to.  In short it turns your favourite websites, twitter, facebook streams into a digital magazine.  We’ve had a play and enjoyed it, few issues around content rights but hey that’s for them to sort out whilst we enjoy the app.  Go and give it a go (it’s free!).
