This Week in Digital Marketing 13-17 September: Google Analytics Tips & Tricks, Justin Bieber and how to get more fans
September 16, 2010 by Ben Young
Google Instant launched (yay!) and while we’re searching better, Facebook overtakes total time than Google which is great but doesn’t really mean anything, Google makes money when you leave – right? Facebook makes money when you stay. This week we have Google Analytics Tips & Tricks, Facebook Fan strategies and the Bieber effect on Twitter.
Get the Most out of your Google Analytics Data
Google Analytics is a wieldy beast these days, there are even whole books on it, anyway even we find tonnes of new tips and tricks to get the most out of your Google Analytics data, check out this great post which covers little known things like using Google Analytics without javascript, tracking outbound clicks with jQuery and how to track site search without keywords in the url.
The Pew Internet Project
This post from Mashable shares data from a Pew Internet Project study looking at how fast consumers are embracing mobile applications, according to their research of the 82% of (US) Adults who own a cell phone nearly 1/3 of them have downloaded an app, some other interesting stats are that 76% of them take photos on their phone, 34% play a game and interestingly 34% record video. Behaviours to watch especially if you’re looking at a mobile app campaign.
Twitter to Launch New Twitter
Twitter is set to launch the new twitter, you can watch their demonstration video (social networks definitely investing more in video production these days) or check out the announcement page. In short they’re looking to provider a richer experience around engaging with tweets and related media, now that they’ve gotten the attention of mainstream consumers they need to make this shift to keep them on site and provide a more fluid experience.
5 Facebook Fan Acquisition Strategies
SearchEngineJournal covers off 5 Facebook Fan Acquisition Strategies, such as turning buyers into fans at time of purchase, incentivised likes (complete this behaviour to get a reward) Facebook Ads and more, read the full post to get all the details – understanding your acquisition strategy (or defining it if you haven’t) is crucial, especially if you’re needing organisation buy in.
More about the Rumored Google Me
We have more talk of the rumoured Google Me with Eric Schmidt talking about how they are going to weave more social tools into the Google Product Suite, which lines up with my discussion in the last podcast, that Google Me is going to be a loose connection social network rather than a centralised hub like Facebook.
Twitter Dedicates Infrastructure to Justin Bieber
According to an insider source at Twitter 3% of their infrastructure is dedicated to Justin Bieber mania! That’s crazy, that is to say that 1 in 30 tweets is related to Justin Bieber. It goes to show how much of an impact an internet phenomenon can have and what kind of power they can bring if they select your platform. What happens if he leaves? What happens if more Justin Biebers come on board?
On a Lighter Note
SpringWise gave us the heads up about this cool iPhone app which lets your try on a virtual watch to see how it fits on your hand. Neat idea – need to get this and have a play.
Imitation is the best form of flattery and that’s what Conan O’Brien has done, ripped off the Old Spice videos, nicely done.
