This Week in Digital Marketing 2-6 August: Millions of Marketers breath a sigh of relief!
August 5, 2010 by Ben Young
This week we recorded the first podcast edition of “This Week in Digital Marketing” we’re going to do this once a month as a wrap up of our faviourite stories. This will be released next week on this blog. This week though, from Linkbait to mobile marketing to a piece of software that helps you annotate websites, enjoy and read on for more.
Using Press Releases to boost SEO
An age old SEO favourite, using online press releases to help with your search engine optimisation goals. Very smart. PRWeb is a great way to do just that, push your press release out, whilst (using the online option) you can drive highly targeted links back to your site (we’ve had fantastic results over the years). Make the jump to HubSpot for the full article: 4 Ways News Releases Boost SEO.
Finally: a million marketers breath a sigh of relief (including us)
Google finally rolled out multiple sign in! This has been my #1 headache for years… a quick talk around the team confirms the same. In short now from your Google Accounts page you can set other accounts to link them all up. In short it means you can login to one account (and by proxy all associated accounts) then when logged into certain Google Services you can then swap accounts (Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine & Google Code). Google (unofficial) system blog has the full details on how you can set it up.
GreenPeace crowdsources BP’s new logo (and it ain’t bad)
Indicating the power of online crowdsourcing GreenPeace have collected over 25,000 votes for the new BP Logo (wow!). It’s not bad (well unless you are BP). We’ve had experience with using crowdsourcing for design and can vouch for it. The real story here though is around using this to help spread the GreenPeace cause, what they stand for and engaging with their supporters. Great job on all accounts. Read the stories behind the winning logo and other runner ups over at SitePoint.
What’s Hot on Digg?
Social Implications looks at what’s hot on digg, taking the most popular websites, topics and users on dig in the last month. For example YouTube got 127 posts (the most), telegraph 84 posts (great for traditional news site), bbc 69 posts, the list goes on mainly a mix of fun videos, news and tech. Interestingly to see the top users, how they submit and also comparing the most submitted sites vs most popular.
Getting intitimate with your customers (via Twitter)
Marketing Profs shares this case study How Wheat Thins mined Twitter to surprise fans, 1) They studied how Twitter users view the little crackers. 2) They found their biggest fans—and surprised them. 3) They prepared for the response. They sum it up best by saying “Twitter isn’t just for building followers and sharing tweets; it’s a rich data source for a brand’s life pulse. Consider acting on your Twitter data to create a special real-world experience for customers”. Read the full post – such a great idea for really connecting with your customers and spreading good will (who else has conversations around crackers? – now I’m sure there are a lot of people).
On a lighter note
On a lighter note (well not so light initially) but Bryan Rhoads discusses how Intel uses social media over here AND you ought to check out UnrulyMedia’s Viral Video Chart – you can see the most viral videos (by number of shares) of all time.
