This Week in Digital Marketing 16-20 August: Yahoo Pipes for Twitter, Viral and Corporate Blogging

August 19, 2010 by

We’re on the cusp of Facebook Places – it should be announced as this gets published (See TechCrunch live reporting here) – however there is still a heck of a lot going on, Tweetmeme has some new services (and a partnership with Twitter), we look at Corporate Blogs & Five Viral Rules…

Hold it! That’s my name!

Mashable logoMashable reviews 7 services to find and reserve your name across the web, always a hassle, firstly what services are there that I should watch? But also you ought to grab your name and hold it just to defend your position. Most services will oblige and give you back your account if you have a trademark, however pre-empting this is only going to save time.

Yahoo Pipes for Twitter!

Tweetmeme logoTweetmeme has announced a new service Datasift, in short Yahoo Pipes for Twitter, “Datasift will be a programming language for creating complex searches such as “People in New York with over 200 followers who have mentioned Barack Obama in a positive way with no swearing in the past day” “. Sounds like great fun, we use Yahoo Pipes frequentlyto help us sort through the world’s marketing blog posts, so getting the same analysis for Twitter is going to be hugely valuable.

Twitter Partners with Tweetmeme for Retweets

twitter-1-billion-tweetsIn an interesting twist, Twitter has partnered with Tweetmeme to do their own retweet button, what’s surprising is they haven’t just bought them out to integrate the service. They key difference is site owners can suggest that people that retweet should follow specified people (and help boost their own following), as well as of course going through the official twitter channel. I’m sure (like Facebook like buttons) it’s the first step, step two will be giving site owners more stats/metrics for site owners.

Mashable lists 15 Top Blogs

Mashable logoMashable has put together a great list of the top 15 corporate blogs with a wide range from the 37Signals blog (an obvious champion) to Squarespace, Dell, Zillow and Disney (a great mix) – unfortunately there is no mention of the Mint.com blog one of our personal favourites…and definitely helped with their success.

The five viral rules

Jonah Peretti CEO of BuzzFeed talks to TechCrunch about his companies five rules for making things go viral, 1) Create media for the ‘bored at work’ network, 2) Practice the Mullet Strategy (you’ll have to read the article to fully understand), 3) Try Big Seed Marketing, 4) Target the Maniacs and 5) Be a Mormon, Not a Jew… this post is well worth sitting down and having a read. We also have his presentation embedded below:

On a Lighter Note

Silverlight logoOn a lighter note, check out some of Microsoft’s digital advertising Silverlight showcase, tonnes in there and always interesting to see what people are up to. Check out Twitter Tales, the stories behind some of Twitter’s users, few gems in there from funny to inspirational. You can also of course submit your own.
