This Week In Digital Marketing 12-16 Sep: Google+ Releases it’s API, 6 Interesting Social Media Stats and Twitters New Analytics

September 18, 2011 by

This week in digital marketing sees Google+ release part of it’s API. Facebook gets a new Subscribe button with similar functionality to that of Twitters’ follow. HubSpot shares 6 interesting Social media statistics you need to know and we learn 5 landing page mistakes that will ‘murder your conversion rate’.

Google+’s First API Released

Google+ has released its first API allowing developers to incorporate the new social network into their existing applications. There isn’t much doubt we’ll see plenty of new apps written for Google+, according to a recent report “Two-thirds of developers believe that Google+ has the potential to challenge or catch up with Facebook”. Though the API is very limited in it’s current scope, Google will continue to release functionality and more data as it can.

6 Interesting Social Media Statistics

HubSpot has compiled some interesting statistics they believe every marketer should be aware of. ‘Tumblr tripled its unique US audience over the last year.’ Tumblr is becoming a popular way to view and share content with it’s intuitive and customisable interface. Advertising on popular pages could become a valuable space. ‘56% of mobile users most value the GPS capabilities of their smartphone.’ I found this result interesting as I thought the MP3 player or camera would be a larger percentage than the GPS. Though this gives insight into how useful and effective Geo-Marketing could become. You can view the rest of the stats here on the HubSpot blog.

Facebook’s New Subscribe Button

Facebook has introduced a ‘Subscribe’ button allowing you to receive public updates from people you aren’t Friends with. The functionality is similar to following someone on Twitter. As Facebook tend to do now, they have packed the feature with privacy options allowing you to decide what kind of information you will get from the person. You have the option to turn the Subscribe button off for your profile if you choose. Read more on the new feature on Mashable here.

Younger Adults ‘Like’ Ads More, Women More Likely to Click Through

When viewing Facebook ads men and women equally click the ‘Like’ button, but women are more likely to click on the ad itself, according to a new report from SocialCode. They analysed over 4 million data points for Facebook ads that offer a ‘Like’ button; the study included roughly 50 clients in multiple verticals over a 10-month period. Bad news for marketers trying to get a handle on that elusive male demographic. Check the rest of the numbers out here at MarketingProfs.

Twitter Releases It’s Analytics Tool

Twitter have an unveiled a handy analytics tool for website owners to view how much traffic they recieve from Twitter. Specifially the tool provides 3 main benefits: See how much of your sites content is being shared on Twitter, view how much traffic Twitter sends to your site and measure the effectiveness of your tweet button integration. The user interface is modern and aesthetically pleasing with a ‘less is more’ style. You can read the post on the Twitter Developers blog here.

On A Lighter Note…

Here’s a viral ad for Ojai Valley Taxidermist in the US, another great low budget Ad using a little humour to go viral. Within hours of the video being posted on Reddit it had 50,000 views and is now at 250,000. The power of the internet!
