Language Analysis: What’s your readability like?
June 3, 2010 by Ben Young
The Hubspot Website Grader is a fantastic tool for analysing your Digital Communications. It’ll analyse your webpage (and your competitors) for a number of variables, one in particular is language analysis. What’s the reading level required to engage with your site?
It’s a great benchmark for seeing if you’re reaching the right market. Want to reach most people? Lower the reading level. Looking to slice the market and talk to a specific demographic adjust the language accordingly.
However for most of us, we want to ensure middle high school (about 12-14 years) can read it, as this is the most common reading level.
If you want to check it before, you go live, you can also use Google Docs. Simply open your document and go to Tools -> Word Count to find your Flesch-Kincaid readability score.
Your document will be graded with a number between 1 and 100. Your sweet spot is the 60-70 range.
| 90.0–100.0 | easily understandable by an average 11-year-old student |
| 60.0–70.0 | easily understandable by 13- to 15-year-old students |
| 0.0–30.0 | best understood by university graduates |
Give it a shot, let us know what you got.
